Gold Connection House Rules - Andy Merritt 1997 =============================================== A good game, but some of the rules just didn't seem right - maybe my translation (Peter F Dwyer) is inaccurate, but if not then I recommend these changes: Stealing from an Opponent * Only allow this when an opponent has 10+ bullion in their safe (standard rules) * You may only attempt to steal the highest valued bullion bars in any (partial) set. eg. in a partial set of black bullion, 1,2,3,4, it would be legal to try to steal, 4 or 4+3 or 4+3+2 or 4+3+2+1, but trying to steal 2+3 or 1+2 would not be legal. This keeps stealing powerful, but not overwhelmingly so, as I found it without any restrictions on what could be stolen - it does this by making more complete sets more difficult to disrupt. * If the theft is successful and the player continues on and successfully ends their turn without busting then the victim of the theft gets 1 consolation point. If the player attemped to steal and failed or successfully stole but then bust later in their turn then the victim does not get a consolation point. The original rules for this in my set were very odd - they said the victim would get a consolation chip if the theft failed. This unbalancing the game rather than balances it, which IMO is a bad thing.
