In the end quite a lot of work was needed! The first problem was the windscreen surround which had badly rusted as shown below left. The whole of the windscreen surround was cut out and one from a scrapped Spitfire welded in it's place. The front edge of the roof was repaired at the same time.
The inner and outer sills on both sides had to be replaced, of course, which included repairing the adjacent floorpans and B-post panels. The picture below shows the one of the sills before and after the repairs. The pictures can also been seen separately here. The suspension and braking systems were completely overhauled and, after passing the MOT test, it was back on the road in 1989 and used as everyday transport, in all weathers, throughout the year. At one point a second-hand 6 cylinder 2.5 litre engine was fitted from a 2500 TC (which did substantially improved the torque but, unfortunately, also dramatically increased the oil consumption!) while the original 2.0 litre engine was rebuilt following an rather over-enthusiastic thrash along the M4 motorway near London. A 'TriumphTune' GT exhaust system was also fitted. Seven years and nearly 40,000 miles after the car was rebuilt it was becoming increasingly difficult to keep the rust in check, while used as an everyday car. So, it was taken off the road and is now awaiting restoration! (Where have you heard that before?) |
