Magnum Opus

Home Up

Magnum Opus (in various formats) were already well established when the Flett Band were going up and coming down. I joined because Paul Z asked me to when Chris (the last bass player) moved on. I was quite flattered and did it.  We practiced for 2 days solid- then it was all systems go again. This little permutation of the band lasted until October 1977. These pictures were taken at Nottingham Market Square in the summer of 1977 (Many thanks Bob Kirkwood). It's the same Fender Precision as before with the paint scraped off.... with a scout knife at it happened!

(Little pictures should launch a new incidence of your browser- with a bigger picture!)

I had to pack it in when all the different places we played merged in to the same one place- wherever it was, but we made some good sounds. On my penultimate appearance with these guys, I met two young ladies- and married one of them the following year!
It was a bit weird really. Whenever you played somewhere with these guys, you could pick ANY vacant table in the place and sit at it, and the very next person to come in would come up to you and say "That's MY seat you know!". I was sat at the back of the Railway Inn listening to the sound levels the other lads were setting up when the above mentioned girls appeared and said "Are you going to sit there all night? They're OUR seats!" - bad start to a relationship or what?
Another regular occurrence - someone would always sit RIGHT NEXT to the PA cabinets - and immediately complain about the noise when we started playing. We seriously believed that folks thought they were sat next to a Chocolate Vending Machine or something! "Hey! Where do you put the money in?"
