Tree Sparrow

Passer montanus 14cm

The Tree Sparrow is often referred to as the House Sparrows country cousin, as it is seldom seen in urban areas. Tree Sparrows are also alot more scarce than their close relatives.

The West Midland Bird Club reserve at Belvide is home to a small population, where they are usually easiest to spot at the Gazebo Hide feeding station, halfway down the southern shore of the reservoir.

Tree Sparrows are easily distinguished from the House Sparrow by their chestnut crown and black cheek patches.

Even at a regular feeding station, the Tree Sparrows can often be quite timid, so I was particularly pleased to be able to get several good shots as a group of 4 birds remained in the vicinity for about 20 minutes.
