Treecreeper

Certhia familiaris 11-13cm

Treecreepers generally don't stay still for long, which can mean big problems for digiscopers. The time required to set up for a shot, often means that by the time the equipment is ready, the bird has left the scene. They also tend to remain under the tree canopy alot of the time, which means that light can be a problem.

The bird featured in the main image on this page however, returned several times to the same tree (which was standing in a glade in full sunlight) and spread itself flat against the trunk, sunbathing. An immature Blackcap was also doing this on the same tree.

Although easily overlooked, Treecreepers are fairly common in Staffordshire. They will often be seen climbing up trees in a spiralling motion before dropping to the base of a tree nearby and begin climbing again.
