Spotted Flycatcher

Muscicapa striata 14cm

A summer visitor to Staffordshire, the Spotted Flycatcher inhabits open deciduous woodland and is almost entirely insectiverous.

The featured birds were photographed in a wooded area adjacent to Blithfield reservoir. The pair appeared to be feeding within an approx. 50sq metre area, flitting from perch to perch and performing occasional mid air acrobatics as they caught insects.

These shots represent the limits to which I've been able to push my Nikon Coolpix 995 digital camera and spotting scope. The low light under the canopy meant that most shots were taken at under 1:30sec shutter speed and I was actually quite surprised to find I had some usable shots.
