Siskin
Carduelis spinus 12cm
These small finches are similar in size and behavior to Redpolls, but
are readily identified by their yellowy green colouration. The males have
a striking black cap and bib, whilst the females look somewhat plainer,
although both sexes have beautifiul black and white mottled breasts.
Although present in the UK all year round these small birds are alot
easier to see in the winter, when they will often be seen travelling in
small flocks. Siskins will readily visit garden feeders, appearing especially
fond of peanuts and niger seed in our garden.
A flock of about 10 birds has been visiting our garden regularly this
winter, although occasionally we have seen up to 36. The main image here
was taken from the pathway in front of our house while this male Siskin
perched in the Cherry tree in our front garden.
