Habitat Male -breeding Male -winter Female

Reed Bunting

Emberiza schoeniclus 14-16cm

Having a wetland habitat close by makes Reed Buntings one of the easiest non garden birds for me to get close to, especially during the breeding season when the males tend to stay within a small territory alot of the time perching on prominent song posts, like a tall reed or small tree.

The black and white head makes the males pretty much unmistakable in breeding plumage. In winter the colouration is alot more subdued, as can be seen from the two images featured.

Females lack the distinctive head markings and fall into the small brown bird category when seen from a distance.
