Red-necked Palarope

Phalaropus lobatus 18cm

A small scrape on Doxey Marshes in Stafford must have seemed like one of the small tundra pools that Phalaropes frequent in the far northern areas of Scandinavia, because this migrating juvenile bird stayed for a couple of days.

The bird showed well for a steady stream of visitors who were notified of its presence on the West Midlands Bird Club hotline.

These small members of the sandpiper family of waders seem to be constantly on the move, sitting high in the water, frequently changing direction in a constant hunt for food.
