Nuthatch
Sitta europaea 14cm
The Nuthatch is a common resident of deciduous woodland in much of England
and Wales. Birds will also visit garden feeders where they will home in
on peanut feeders.
Nuthatches are year round residents and the best time to see them up
close is probably during the winter when natural food sources are scarce
and they become more frequent visitors to feeding stations.
The bird shown in the main image was one of 3 at a regular feeding spot
in Brocton Coppice on Cannock Chase. These birds were extremely tolerant
of human presence and came down to feed even when we were within a yard
or two putting out food. The main problem for digiscoping was that they
don't stay still for long!
