MagpiePica pica 45cm The magpie is instantly recognisable, both by it's distinctive black and white colouration and by it's unfeasibly long tail. In good light the black plumage on the wings and tail reveal iridescent hints of green and blue. Although the magpie is often vilified as a stealer of other birds eggs and young, these intelligent opportunists are full of character and can be very entertaining to observe. In common with most of the crow family, magpies exhibit a high level of intelligence and seem well aware of their surroundings. I have found them to be surprisingly difficult to photograph at close quarters, as they will often depart once they realize that they have become the focus of your attention. |
