Habitat

Grey Heron

Ardea cinerea 91cm

The Grey Heron is probably the only member of the Heron family that most people will have seen in Britain. Other members of the heron family are either very scarce, like the Bittern, or are rare visitors like Egrets.

A wetland habitat like Doxey Marshes is ideal for photographing Herons. Once you have a location like this where Herons are fairly numerous and reasonably tolerant of human activity they make the ideal digiscoping subject. Their large size means they can be successfully photographed from a greater distance than small birds and the best thing about them is that they will sit still for minutes at a time, patiently waiting while the scope and camera are being set up.
