Great Crested Grebe

Podiceps cristatus 48cm

Unmistakable in its very striking breeding plumage, this is Europes largest grebe and is a familiar sight on many English lakes and ponds.

During Spring, it's well worth looking out for pairs of Great Crested Grebes, as they indulge in very impressive and elaborate courtship displays. Once paired up, they will usually build a floating nest amongst vegatation near the shore.

Although reasonably tolerant of human presence, grebes do like to retain a reasonable comfort zone between you and them. I've found that settling in a location and allowing the birds to drift closer to you is the best way to get within optimum digiscoping distance.
