Cormorant

Phalacrocorax carbo 90cm

I've always found the small populations of Cormorants that live on our larger lakes and reservoirs rather exotic. Their striking black plumage and the fact that they seem to be so out of place away from the coast makes them particularly fascinating and I have to confess that personally they are a great favourite, because of my childhood memories of Graculas, from the Sagas of Noggin the Nog (now that does date me!).

These large fish eaters are not well liked by everyone, especially fisherman on well stocked trout fisheries like Blithfield, and as a result they are wary of any close approach by humans.

Your best chance of seeing Cormarants inland is to look for abandoned platforms or posts well out in a lake or reservoir.
