Bullfinch

Pyrrhula pyrrhula 15cm

A stocky brightly coloured finch, the males bright reddy pink breast with contrasting black head is unmistakable once seen. The female, which is usually somewhere closeby (as these finches often tarvel around their territories in pairs), has a much duller pinkish grey grey breast.

Although not partuculary shy, I have found Bullfinches to be fairly wary of any approach by a human, so I was very pleased to discover them at a feeding station at Marquis Drive visitor centre on Cannock Chase in large numbers, where they are used to being observed from a seating area in amongst some conifer trees near the feeding area.
