Blackbird

Turdus merula 25cm

One of our most immediatly recognisable garden birds, the Blackbird is widespread throughout Britain and Europe.

Omnivorous, taking insects, worms and a wide range of fruits, the Blackbird is a frequent visitor to bird tables.

These birds were photographed on a lawn at the education centre where I work and in my back garden. The two male birds were hopping around the lawn in short stop start bursts, occasionally stopping to extract a worm from the ground. This fairly typical behaviour can be a real problem when digiscoping, as the technique requires the subject to keep still for at least a few seconds for focusing.
