Match Report

Poynton  A v  Signol Athletic

Date:  4th October 2007.
Report:  Phil Perry

Yet another beautiful morning at Deva Fields how long can this go on? Sun shining and not a breeze to be had.
Signol were the visitors today and we were very fortunate to welcome one of the F.A’s professional referee’s Mr. Stuart Mathewson to officiate.
Poynton won the toss and elected to play towards the Chester Road end. The boys started as they meant to go on and were passing the ball fluidly. It wasn’t long before Kelly stormed onto a free kick from Potter heading an absolute bullet into the back of the net giving the soon to be very busy visiting  keeper no chance it was 1 . 0.

The boys were playing well in all areas.  Kemp and Campbell again shutting down any breaks from the Signol attack. Hulme once again confirming his class and also making a number of interceptions and well timed runs.
Paisley playing on the left was making some very good passes with his left boot putting a number of other  players into goal scoring positions. Potter, Kelly and Bell narrowly missing, it could be forgiven at this point, for the Poynton faithful to think that the boys weren’t going to get their well deserved second goal.

However Mc Laren put a through a ball to Perry, who was left one on one with the keeper, however dribbling around him Perry beat the keeper and the score was 2- 0.
At this point it would be fair to say the boys could have been six goals up, in fact goalkeeper Wadsworth did well to maintain concentration. The shots on goal continued with Kelly, Potter, Paisley and Bell either forcing saves from the Signol keeper or narrowly missing on goal.

Then just before half time Paisley once again put a good ball through, this time to Potter whom slotted away Poynton’s third goal.
The half time whistle was blown and the first half ended 3-0 to Poynton.
The second half started  with Poynton carrying on where they left off, passing the ball around well and being first to every ball, soon Perry went on a run along the right and spotting the keeper off his line took an opportunist strike from outside the area slotting the ball sweetly in the top left hand corner 4-0.
As the match restarted and to Signol’s credit they kept their heads up and even had a couple of shots on the Poynton goal.
In fact on one occasion Signol crossed the ball in from the left and into the path of their advancing forward but Wadsworth was sharp and punched the ball into touch and out of danger.

However soon after the relentless Hulme was taken off with a possible groin strain ( hopefully not too serious ? ) Martin came on and slotted in well, working hard to fill the space Hulme had left. Simpson  continued to work hard unselfishly running and tackling well, as did McLaren, Kemp and the ever reliable Adam Campbell.
Alex Mc Laren got number five for Poynton a well deserved  reward! 5 -0 to Poynton
Again the visitors tried to come back but to no avail Paisley getting on the end of a Potter corner 6-0 to Poynton.

Poynton’s seventh goal came from Potter, and the game was  finally out of Signol’s reach.
Poynton’s  last chance of the match went to the advancing Kemp who just failed to make contact with a free ball in the Signol area and the match ended 7-0 to Poynton
Finally as previously mentioned at the start of this report we were very fortunate in having one of the F A’s  professional officials here, and I am happy to  inform both teams that Mr. Mathewson  mentioned that it was a good match and very entertaining, so well done to both sides.
