| 13th March 2005 | Some interesting information from Jean Wark in Florida. Her mother's mother was a Copping, and she can trace her family back to Richard Copping. She has been able to provide Richard's 13 other siblings plus his parents names. Thanks Jean. |
| 12th December 2004 | More information from Cliff Jones relating to Richard Copping. Cliff has uncovered a poor law removal notice for Richard Copping and his family. For some reason Richard fell on hard times and as he had lived in the parish for less that 5 years, was returned to his previous parish of Brome, where he had rented a windmill for £30 a year between 1841 and 1845. There are some wonderful details in the notice including a deposition by Richard himself. Unfortunately the question of how they came apon hard times is not answered |
| 4th September 2004 | An informative email from Cliff Jones led me to correct the entry for Frances Chapman. A copy of her son's birth certificate led me to think she had dies in childbirth, but in fact she lived until a ripe old age, with a number of other children. Thanks for helping sort this out for me Cliff. |
| 15th June 2004 | I had a very useful email from Roger White, who has been reaseaching his tree and found a branch of the Attfield family which intersects mine - in particular Nimmy Attfield (nee Charlton). He has helped fill in lots of blanks, and find a few more names. Thanks Roger (time to start working on a website I think). |
| 22nd Jan 2004 | I had a very useful email from Paul Newell who had an apparent mising link with the tree: Robert Newell. Robert didnt appear in any of the records of the family I could find, but Paul had traced his lineage back to him and beyond. A subsequent visit to the History Centre later, and Robert turned up in the Farncombe census records and the link was proved. Something else the Paul pointed out was the Robert's brother Francis was not the High Flier I had thought - he was a Sawyer, not a Lawyer! Thanks for the information Paul! |
| 13th Oct 2003 | A visit to Surrey History centre. Confirmed Francis Newell's details and found his father James and a few Beagley's. There are a quite a few Newells and Beagleys in Farnham in the 1700s, so sorting out who belongs where is quite difficult. Incidetally, the earliest Newell marriage I could find was of John Newell from Odiham to Ann Chandler in 1722. It seems quite likely there is a link but it might be a bit tricky to find it. |
| 24th August 2003 | OK not much happening recently, but my sister lent me a pile of old family photos to add to the site (relating mostly to the Mannings side of the family). I also got lucky with an internet search and discovered a reference to my earlist forebear Francis Newell's wife Mary Beagley. It turns out that they were married in Farnham rather than Aldershot, so the trail may go back a bit further. |
| 14th Apr 2003 | Hectic recently (more excuses), but browsing the 1901 census site revealed a few more links. Rather aptly, my first relative killed in action turned up in the war graves site. Carlton Mannings died in action at Ypres, 1915. |
| 12th Jan 2003 | Its been a bit quiet over Christmas, but a very helpful email from Phil Lewis filled in some gaps with the Copping side of the tree. |
| 12th Dec 2002 | Visited the Family Records Centre briefly. Updated a few details on the earlier Newells in Aldershot, using the 1841 & 1851 census. |
| 20th Nov 2002 | Managed to get some PDF ancestor charts to work for Albert Newell, Jessie Copping, William Smith and Kitty Mannings. These charts require Adobe Acrobat to view. |
| 15th Nov 2002 | Used the Online 1901 Census to get a bit more information on the Copping and Matthews families. |
| 8th Nov 2002 | Yet another visit to the Surrey History Service in Woking (an absolute mine of information!), going through births and marriages at both St Michaels Church, Aldershot and St Peters in Ash, looking for Barretts or Newells. There is a new branch of Barretts in Ash that as yet do not connect to my tree, but I have fill in a lot more blanks. I got no further back on the Newells - there are no entries for Newells prior to Francis in Aldershot, but the Barretts now go back to Thomas Barrett who was probably born around 1770. |
| 10th Oct 2002 | Another visit to the Surrey History Service in Woking, this time trawling through births and marriages at St Michaels Church, Aldershot (which fortunately still comes under Surrey). This revealed generations of Newells going back to Francis Newell, who was probably born around 1770. This was a suprise as the family had lived in the village prior to the huge increase in population which occurred in the 1850s when Queen Victoria decided to found an army base in the town. |
| 5th Oct 2002 | Kittys Smith's birth certificate showed Sydney and Ethel as the parents. This doesnt clear up the mystery, but I am quite glad there was no one unexpected as the parents. |
| 19th Sept 2002 | A visit to the Surrey History Service gave me christening info on the Barrett family from Normandy. Also discovered a puzzle regarding Kitty Smith. |
| 14th Sept 2002 | An email from George Copping verified the information from 12th Sept and provided Frank Copping's grand parents and year of his death. The mystery of the identity of Franks second wife is also cleared up. He married Emily in 1929. He married his first wife Jessie in 1906. |
| 12th Sept 2002 | A trip to the Family Records Centre gave me more details of Frank Copping's family. |
| 6th Sept 2002 | Added Frank Copping's occupation and year of birth. |
| 27th Aug 2002 | After an evening in the Family Records Office, added more details of the Newell family living in Badshot Lea between 1830 to 1891. |
| 20th Aug 2002 | Got lucky with the Froyle Town Website, as it contains a large amount of census information relating to the Goodyear family |
| 10th Aug 2002 | After collating basic information from the older members of the family, got the website up and running! |
