• Poor Law Removal Notice: Removal from Wilby to Brome, Suffolk, 1 Apr 1852, Wilby, Suffolk. 1 Text of notices reproduced below Suffolk to wit : The Complaint of James Aldridge one of the Overseers of the Poor of the parish of Wilby in the said County of Suffolk made on behalf of the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said parish of Wilby and with their assent, unto us the undersigned two of Her Majesty's Justices of the Peace in and for the said County at the Queens Head Inn at Stradbrooke in the said County of Suffolk, this first Day of April in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Fifty two, who saith : That Richard Copping and Frances his Wife and their five children namely William aged eleven years Emma aged nine years James aged seven years Richard aged four years and George aged one year have lately come to inhabit and are now inhabiting in the said parish endeavouring to settle there contrary to Law, not having resided in the said parish for five years next before the said Application and Complaint and not having gained a legal Settlement there, nor having produced any Certificate acknowledging them to be settled elsewhere, and that on the eighth Day of December in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and fifty one the said Richard Copping and Francis his wife and their said children became chargeable to the said parish of Wilby and from thence hitherto have been relieved by, and are now receiving Relief from the said parish The said James Aldridge therefore prays that the said Richard Copping may be duly examined as to the place of their legal Settlement, and further dealt with according to Law James Aldridge Overseer Exhibited before me the Day and Year ) Aug Cooper first above written ) J Hodgson
Parish of Wilby in the County of Suffolk : In the matter of Richard Copping a Pauper and Frances his wife and their five children (that is to say) William, Emma, James, Richard and George To the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the parish of Brome in the County of Suffolk. Take Notice, That the above-named Richard Copping and Frances his wife and heir five children namely William aged eleven years Emma aged nine years James aged seven years Richard aged four years and George aged one year now residing in the parish of Wilby have become and now are chargeable to the said parish and that an Order of Justices has been obtained for their Removal to your parish of Brome as their last place of legal Settlement (a duplicate of which Order is herewith sent) And further Take Notice, that the following are the grounds of their said Removal, including the Particulars of the Settlement relied upon by us in support thereof : (that is to say) That shortly before Michaelmas in the year one thousand eight hundred and forty one the said Richard Copping hired of Robert Knipe Cobbold of Carleton in the County of Suffolk Esquire a Dwelling house, the same being separate and distinct, and a Windmill and two acres of land all situate in the said parish of Brome as tenant from year to year at the yearly rent of Thirty pounds That the said Richard Copping entered upon the occupation of the said Dwelling house Windmill and land under the said hiring at Michaelmas one thousand eight hundred and forty one and occupied the same thence continually until Michaelmas one thousand eight hundred and forty five That the said Richard Copping paid the said rent of Thirty pounds per annum for the whole of the time of his said occupation and was assessed to the poor rates in respect of the said premises for the whole of the said time and paid the said rates and resided in the said Dwelling house during the whole of his said occupation, the said Dwelling house and land being above the yearly value of Ten pounds And also for that the said Richard Copping and Frances his wife and their said five children have come to inhabit and are now inhabiting in the said parish of Wilby not having gained a settlement there nor having produced any certificate acknowledging them to be settled elsewhere and they are now actually chargeable to the said parish And furthe Take Notice, That unless Notice of Appeal against the said Order be received by us within Twenty-one Days from the sending hereof, the said Paupers will be removed to your said parish of Brome in pursuance of the said Order, and no Appeal against the same shall afterwards be allowed. THE DEPOSITIONS UPON WHICH THE ORDER WAS MADE Suffolk to wit : The Examination of Richard Copping at present residing in the parish of Wilby in the said County of Suffolk touching the last place of the legal settlement of the said Richard Copping and Frances his wife and their five children namely William aged eleven years Emma aged nine years James aged seven years Richard aged four years and George aged one year, taken on Oath before the undersigned, Two of Her Majesty's Justices of the Peac in and for the said County, this first day of April in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Fifty two, upon a certain Complaint of the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said parish of Wilby unto us that the said Richard Copping and Frances his wife and their said children have come to inhabit and are now inhabiting in the said parish of Wilby not having resided in the said parish for five years next before the said Application and Complaint, and not having gained a legal Settlement therein, nor having produced any Certificate acknowledging them to be settled elsewhere, and that the said Richard Copping and Frances his wife and their said children are now actually chargeable to the said parish of Wilby The said Richard Copping upon his Oath, saith, I am forty three years of age and was born at Brundish int he County of Suffolk of which parish my parents were then (as I believe) settled Inhabitants. In the year one thousand eight hundred and eleven my parents left Brundish and came to reside at Wilby. I accompanied them there and continued to reside with them at Wilby until the year one thousand eight hundred and twenty three when I left Wilby and was bound apprentice (by Indenture dated the fourteenth day of May one thousand eight hundred and twenty three duly stamped and executed) to Mr Robert Smith of Ditchingham in Norfolk Miller for the term of four years. I was then fifteen years of age. I duly served my master during the whole period of my apprenticeship and boarded and lodged in his house in the said parish of Ditchingham and I slept the last night of my apprenticeship in my said Master's house. After the expiration of my apprenticeship I served as Journeyman Miller in several places at weekly wages and shortly before the Michaelmas in the year one thousand eight hundred and forty one I hired of Robert Knipe Cobbold or Carleton in the County of Suffolk Esquire a Dwelling house and a post windmill (with a Brick round house under it) and two acres of land in the parish of Brome in Suffolk at the annual Rent of Thirty pounds . . . . . . . . . . . .
No Appeal having been made against the orders the Pauper and his family were removed to the parish of Brome on the 27th day of April 1852
