Eli Newell

  • Born: 1871
  • Marriage: Annie Elisabeth Goodyear 26 Oct 1901, Froyle, Hampshire 1
  • Died: Badshot Lea, Farnham, Surrey.

Another name for Eli was Tealer.

  General Notes:

In 1953, Tealer was interviewed by Monica Tice for the Jubilee edition of the Badshot Lea Parish magazine as he was by then one of the oldest members of the village at 83 years old.
Of his schooling:
"... Mr Newell learnt Pot-hooks and hangers from Mrs Rose, and for this they were paid two pence a week. Mr Newell first went to school in a small cottage near the chapel [now 109 Badshot Lea Road]. He tells us that Mrs Rose sewed diligently as the children worked, and when they mis-behaved rapped them sharply on the head with a large thimble"

He went on to recall starting work at the age of 10 yers old as a farmers boy for 4/- a week. During his teens he played the side drum for the Badshot Lea Temperance Band. An anecdote of this band was that they once won a local competition with the first prize being a case of whisky!

2003: Mollie sent a letter to my parents (dated 18th December 2003). Here is an excerpt:

"I so remember the hop picking days and uncle Albie living at the hop kiln for a few weeks and going there for baked potatoes. Grandad Newell (Eli) was the Tallyman with his horse & cart collecting the 7 bushel baskets of hops, they sure took some picking. No toilet facilities in those days, it was just down to the end of the hop row..."

Noted events in his life were:

• Hobbies: The Saucy Kipper:, 1904, Aldershot, Hampshire. An Aldershot carnival float 'The Saucy Kipper' was photographed with Eli (Tealer) as one of the crewmen (see crew list below). The float went on to win that years carnival. The boat was built because of the fabled 'Badshot Lea Docks', which were themselves named after a huge puddle which formed across the road near the site of the modern petrol station whenever there was heavy rain. The village cricket team and football team had nicknames of the 'The Dockers' for years afterwards. The football team incidentally had a secretary called Arthur Newell (a cousin of Eli?) from 1929 for 20 years.
