Here's what the Greenock Telegraph had to say;

GREENOCK RISES TO THE WAKE

CULT rock band 'The Wake" whose line up includes former member of Jesus and the Mary Chain, Bobby Gillespie, play Eva Destruction at Rico's a week tonight.

The group really came to the public's notice in 1983 through a session on the John Peel Show, who is well known for discovering new "alternative" talent.

This was followed with a tour with rock band New Order as their support and a single "Of The Matter", and LP "Here Comes Everybody".

Followers of the group will be well aware of the band's unique sound and old numbers as well as new material will be on their programme for next Thursday night at Rico's.

The Wake (pictured) are made up of Steven Alien (drums), Bobby Giilespie (bass), Caesar (guitar/vocals - ex-Altered Images member) and Carolyn Allen (keyboards/ vocals).

Note - Although Bobby Gillespie was in the Wake at one point, he definitely didn't play that night. In fact, the guy who did later worked as an A&R man for CBS Records. Still can't remember his name though.
