After the battle of Culloden, the British Government decided to
station a garrison at Fort George near Inverness, to quell any future uprisings.
Fort George was the largest ever built in Britain, costing billions of
pounds in today's money. Such was the perceived threat of the Jacobites. It was
never used in anger and soliders are still stationed there.
