FORT GEORGE      1    2    Scotland 2002  Home
After the battle of Culloden, the British Government decided to station a garrison at Fort George near Inverness, to quell any future uprisings. Fort George was the largest ever built in Britain,  costing billions of pounds in today's money. Such was the perceived threat of the Jacobites. It was never used in anger and soliders are still stationed there.

Fort George Parade ground. This could easily accommodate Edinburgh Castle.
