| Safer
Journeys to Schools
Work has finished improving the highways around both sets of infant/junior schools in
Winklebury as part of the Council's Safer Journeys to School program.
The work at
Castle Hill school involved a new crossing at Winklebury Way.
The work at Winklebury schools involved new pavements, new crossings of
WIlloughby Way and Warwick Road, plus new railings outside the school
entrance onto Willoughby Way.
The work programs were due to be axed as part of Tory Hampshire County
Council's cutbacks, but thanks to the
intervention of then-Cllr Lea Jeff, fighting tooth and nail, these schemes were
brought forward a year and have been saved.

Graffiti
in Winlebury
|

|
Winklebury
is suffering its worst attack of graffiti on record. Labour
Councillor Criss Connor is tackling the problem head-on. |
Since mid-June
we have had 3 gangs of taggers going round Winklebury. The Winklebury
Centre has been hit more than once, as have the underpasses on Winklebury
Way, the sports pavilion, shops by the Winkle pub, and various garages
throughout the estate.
The Council cleaning dept spent 45 hours on the Winklebury centre cleaning
up. Criss Connor has been on the case reporting graffiti. When we checked
with the office, we discovered Criss was the only Winklebury Councillor on
record reporting graffiti. Where were the Tories?
Footpath Work to
Stop Motorbikes
Barriers
have been erected to stop motorbikes racing up and down
the footpath that runs next to Winklebury Infant and Junior
Schools..
Cllr Lea Jeff has campaigned long and hard for the safety measures and
welcomes their introduction. The barriers will be similar to the ones in
Ludlow and Harlech Closes that Lea had previously had installed to slow
down bicycles and motorbikes using the footpath.
Improved
Facilities at Winklebury Playing Fields
Proposals are now
in place to improve and enhance the facilities at Winklebury Playing
Fields. Public Consultation has been carried out and the results
incorporated. These improvements will add to the facilities within the
Ward.
Money
for the Youth of Winklebury
Lea Jeff’s
pioneering Winklebury Youth Project
secured more funding from Hampshire County Council to provide 2 new youth
workers. The project had previously secured £66,000 worth of
funding from Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.
The Project has been an outstanding success which has led to a significant reduction of crime and nuisance
in the area. The Porject is now being used as a blueprint for other
projects in the County.
Lea says “The
Youth Project has had a huge boost by securing this extra money to fund the 2
workers. This venture, obtained with help from the Labour Councillors, is
a boon for the Youth of Winklebury.”
The workers are due
to start in June 2004.
Sea
Cadet Grant
Labour Councillors
helped secure a grant for the Sea Cadets at Harlech Close to purchase a
rescue boat.
The motorised offshore lifeboat is now regularly being borrowed by
neighbouring Sea Cadet groups.
The Labour Team is also supporting an
application for Lottery funding for new premises.
Footpath
Improvements
Safety improvements to various footpaths in the
ward have been pushed through. These include:
* Greenways—new tarmac surface
* Kenilworth Road to Roman Road Bus Stop
* Ashwood Way (new path both sides)
* Alongside Milestones.
We are now looking to include more paths in
future programmes.

Phase 3 of the Improvements to the
Winklebury Centre are now complete.
Sentinel Housing Association have installed CCTV
cameras and a range of enhancements including new windows and security
doors to enclose the stair wells.
The cameras are being used to gather evidence against youths spraying
graffiti and other types of anti-social behaviour.
The improvements came about through a series of meetings between Sentinel,
residents and Labour Councillors.
New Surface for
Elmwood Way
Your Labour team has secured funding to
rebuild part of Elmwood Way. The new road surface is now finished and is a
dramatic improvement on the old concrete road which had started to
collapse.

Criss says: “This was the worst section of
the Road and we will be pushing the County Council to get the money to do
the rest of the road.” |
