Tories Try to Kill Town Centre
Swimming Pool

At
a committee meeting on March 2nd 2004, the Tories tried to scupper any chances of
spending badly needed money on the
Town Centre Swimming Pools to stop them from closing down due to old age next year.
The pools are 5 years beyond their design life.
The Tories would
rather see the pools close down and spend funds in their own areas on Sports
Barns and Parish Council Offices. These things have a shaky business case
at best and benefit only a small minority of residents within the
immediate vicinity. Many thousands of children from across the Borough use
the Town Centre Pools. Now Basingstoke faces the prospect of having just
one pool facility (the Aquadrome) to serve over 100,000 people. |
 |
The Tories talk of trying to save
the pools as "robbing" their own rich areas,
when saving the pools benefits the entire Borough. We always knew they only look
after
their own as the 1966 poster (above) shows: it's as true then as it is now.
The Tories ignored a petition of over 8,000 signatures:
that is contemptible.
At
Basingstoke Labour, we are appalled that the Tories
continue to pursue their own narrow self-interests
to the detriment of everyone else.
We will continue to fight to save the Town Centre pools.
