Community Wardens
Two
Community Wardens started work in Oakridge in January. They are based
in John Hunt of Everest School alongside another two wardens for Popley.
Community wardens are there to help residents build a better community.
In other towns, they have a proven track record in reducing crime and
improving neighbourhoods.

* Help reduce crime and nuisance in the neighbourhood
* Help improve the environment by tackling litter and graffiti.
* Help residents with projects and building up the community.
Phase Three of the Oakridge Regeneration
Starts
Oakridge
Central regeneration is an ambitious project costing £35m. Most of this
is funded by Sentinel Housing Group, with £4m coming from
Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.
Oakridge Central was the most deprived
area in the borough of Basingstoke. It made Norden the most deprived Ward
in the Borough and one of the top 27% most deprived wards in England (the
borough average is 90%).
Phases 1 and 2 saw the demolition of the delapidated flats at Cowdrey Close and
Palmer Close, and their replacement with modern houses and apartments, plus the building of the new Oakridge
Hall.
Our
Brand New Community Centre at the Heart of Oakridge
Norden's
Community Association has taken possession of the new Community Centre on
behalf of the whole community of Oakridge, Chapel, and South View.
Alongside the new Centre the Borough is investing £75,000 in new youth
workers. A new play group will open at the Centre. Health care will be
provided by a satellite surgery. A computer centre will enable people to
access the internet. The large hall will accommodate projects, groups and
community based activities.
The whole centre
promises to offer a real resource to our local community, so we want to
encourage people to get involved: it is a community resource there
for everyone.

A33 Roundabout works
back on after Tory U-turn
Crucial improvements to
the A33 will happen after all
but not until 2005, following another U-turn
by Tory Hamshire County Council.
In February 2003 the Hamsphire Tories jeopardised this scheme with the dramatic axing of funding for
the BEST program. This is in spite of already spending money on the works'
planning.
Work was due to start for 20 weeks installing traffic lights, new street lights, cycle
paths, crossings and anti-skid road surfaces on the Reading Road Roundabout,
where the A33 joins the A339 Ring Road.
Traffic has been known to tail back 1/2 mile off the slip road and onto
the Ring Road at peak periods.
Fire
Station for North Basingstoke
The proposed new fire station at
Chineham has been given the green light. Hampshire Fire and Rescue are
looking to build 2 new stations, one at Cosham, the other at Popley.
This
is welcome news. A fire station for the North of Basingstoke has been
talked about for 20 years. Residents in Oakridge, Popley, Chineham,
Lychpit, Sherfield, Bramley and Sherborne St John can look forward to
improved response times as a direct result.
