Community Wardens

Cllr David Potter,
the man who brought you Community Wardens

Community Wardens started work in January 2004, thanks to your Labour-Led Council at Basingstoke.

Ten wardens now operate in Buckskin, Oakridge, Popley, South Ham and Tadley. The wardens work in pairs with staggered shifts. They are based at John Hunt of Everest School in Popley, with local bases in South Ham and Tadley.

Community Wardens :
* Help reduce crime and nuisance
* Help the environment, tackling litter and graffiti.
* Help residents with building up the community.

Since their introduction, we are already seeing positive results in Buckskin and Kempshott.

The secret of Success for Community Wardens is their ability to connect with the community. First and foremost, they are not there to arrest people: that is the job of the police. Evidence from across the country shows that the most successful schemes do not have wardens with powers of arrest: that makes them "poor mens' policemen" and, crucially, loses them a significant slice of the public's trust.

Community Wardens is a scheme championed by the Labour Government which has been phenomenally successful across the country.

Pack Lane Traffic Calming

Q: How many humps do you need to calm traffic in Pack Lane?

A: 18, at a cost of £115,000, according to
Lib Dem councillor Ron Hussey.

Labour Targets Yob Culture

Hooligans as young as 16 will face fines of up to £80 as part of David Blunkett's new measures against anti-social behaviour.

£75 million is being spent over the next 3 years to support the drive to tackle anti-social behaviour.

Locally, youth nuisance is becoming more of a problem, and is being reported for the first time in formerly quiet estates such as Harrow Way, Hatch Warren, Kempshott and Chineham.

Locally and nationally, Labour has a wide range of plans to deal with youth nuisance:
* more Police on the beat
* the introduction of Neighbourhood Wardens following the successful Buckskin pilot
* the setting up of youth schemes along the lines of the successful scheme at Winklebury,
which has significantly reduced crime there
* investing in Youth Workers

Labour is determined to deliver on this critical issue.

Lest We Forget

Peter Lewington, the Tory Councillor for Kempshott, was forced to resign on 19th March 2003 after not attending any meetings for over 6 months.

This is an absolute scandal. A councillor should be serious and not deceive the electorate with pretensions to represention.

If you've lived in Kempshott and voted Tory all these years, is this the sort of representation you want? The
Tory party choose candidates who are not up to the job to represent you. We would urge all Kempshott residents: Vote for the person who will best represent you, not the party.

Yet what really indicts the Tories is they knew all about Peter Lewington yet still moved him from Chineham to fight a safer seat in Kempshott at the last local election.

All Labour Councillors are required to work for your community. If they don't, they are de-selected.
