Brighton Hill Roundabout
The
costs of imroving Brighton Hill Roundabout have spiralled from £1m to
over £3.5m following the initial project assessment. You may have heard
reports in the press that the scheme has hit a block, but at Basingstoke
Labour we are determined to do what it takes to ensure the scheme goes
ahead.
The roundabout scheme was put on
ice in 2003 after Tory-controlled Hampshire County Council dramatically slashing transport budgets in
Basingstoke. The County Council did a U-turn and re-instated the scheme following
efforts by Basingstoke and Deane
Borough Council, who lobbied, hounded, and demanded that they reconsider
the improvements promised for the Brighton Hill Roundabout.
Brighton
Hill Roundabout carries 3000 vehicles per hour in the am peak. It has had
17 personal injury accidents in the last 3 years.
The new B & Q Superstore:
How will it affect traffic?
B
& Q's plans for a 130,000 sq ft new superstore have sparked concerns
over traffic levels on Brighton Hill roundabout.
The current B & Q site is very cramped and totally unsuitable.
Lorries have to park in Lister Road to make deliveries, and the close
proximity of Kimbell Road and the loading bay entrance opposite cause
tremendous problems with traffic entering Lister Road tailing back onto
the A30 Winchester Road and cars struggling to enter/exit the
B & Q car park.
The new store will bring more customers, of that there is no doubt. Many
people currently going up the road to Reading to the B & Q superstore
there would switch to the one in Basingstoke.
Crime on the Rise in Brighton
Hill
Why
is it that crime is on the rise in Brighton Hill
but is falling on other parts of the town, such as Popley and Oakridge?
Could it be something to do with the local councillors?
Popley and Oakridge are Labour-held areas. 2 years ago they had serious
crime problems, especially arson.
But their councillors, being Labour, set out to attack the problem by
being pro-active in the Community and introducing Community
Wardens.
After their introduction, better links were set up in the communities,
people felt they could report low-level incidents not usually dealt with
by the police, and could see the wardens responding, patrolling the
streets daily, and visible benefits began to appear, such as fewer
abandoned cars and reduced fly-tipping. Graffiti and litter were reduced.
By working with the Beat Officers, wardens were able to gather
intelligence on criminals, culminating in the granting of Anti-Social
Behaviour Orders in the courts for the worst offenders.
Community Wardens is a Labour Party national policy initiative. But in
spite of the massive benefits of having them, the Lib Dem Councillors
don't appear to want them in Brighton Hill. WHY?

Con On Council Tax |
|
The
Liberals would replace Council Tax with a "Son of Poll
Tax" Local Income Tax on every individual. Not on property, but
on people. People on low incomes and with low property values will
pay more through Income Tax than they pay through Council Tax.
Currently people pay on average £1000 a year Council tax. Under the
Liberal proposals, average households earning £40000 would pay 3p in the pound or
£1700 a year.

The
Liberals asked councillors at Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to
support their motion to move to Local Income Tax. We are pleased to report
the motion was heavily defeated by 34 votes to 15.
