Although
the numbers were down on last year 22 pairs enjoyed an exciting day of
tennis. The weather was far from kind with intermittent showers
throughout the day but thanks to the availability of the indoor courts
the programme was successfully completed. The semi-finals saw
two pairs from Essex battling it out with two local pairs - one of
each making it through to the final. After a very exciting match
it was Jenny King and Kerry Porter who were the eventual winners over
the local pair Sally Juler and Sheila Brabben.
Once again The Lakenham Club provided an excellent lunch and as ever
it was hard work persuading the ladies back on court!!

It
was a lovely day after so many weeks of dull and wet weather, the sun
came out again and players were complaining it was too humid!
The standard of play was higher than I've known it - and all played in
such a good spirit.
We had a debut pair reach the final today - Nan Thomas (aged 67) has
been waiting for her partner Margaret Hayley to reach 60 so that they
could play together - they are Welsh Internationals, so have been
banned up until now.

The
day started very wet and the forecast threatened no
change. At the first sign of a let up in the rainfall, I
decided to ask the ladies to vote on whether they wanted to play
in the light drizzle, to which they replied unanimously that
they would! Out came the caps and raincoats and they
gallantly played on as the rain got heavier, and eventually two
matches were left, as the competitors chose to stay on court in
the pouring rain and finish their first rubber!
The playing standard in this event was high and the three group
winners were joined by the best runners-up to play in the semi
finals. As the afternoon progressed, the weather improved
and Penny Wyatt and Sally Little took their place in the final
by defeating Alison Smith and Sheena Blenkinsop. Juliet
Lunn and Janeen Quentin who made the semis as best runners-up in
Penny and Sally's group beat Jean Shenton and Lisa Smith-Dubendorfer
also by 4-1. The final was a very close match with Juliet
and Janeen reversing their defeat in the groups earlier in the
day by winning the last two games and so the set 6-4 in,
amazingly enough, bright
sunshine!!
