Sue
Livingston wins
European Women of Achievement Award |
The
12th European Women of Achievement Awards sponsored by IBM were held on
Friday 12 July 2002 at Grosvenor House in London. There were six
categories and the Professional Award sponsored by Oracle UK was won by
BWTA President Sue Livingston.
Sue
was Director of Women's Tennis, European Tennis Association from
1983-1999, responsible for creating and organising The European Women's
Circuit; starting with 20 professional tournaments in Europe. In
2000 there were just under 200 tournaments held in 28 European countries
with total prize money of $2.5 m. Sue started from scratch - with no
previous coordinated circuit or rules for these events. She promoted
the development of tennis throughout Europe and encouraged the National
Tennis Federations to support the Women's Circuit. In 1983 the
profile of women's tennis was very low and barely recognised as a
professional sport; now over 50% of all professional tennis tournaments
worldwide are held in Europe.

BWTA
received a mention by Sarah Edworthy in The Daily Telegraph on Saturday 29
June.
The
article was about Jane O'Donoghue's appearance against Venus Williams on
Centre Court and the importance of feeling good about oneself when
playing tennis. It went on
"This
is music to the ears of the British Women's Tennis Association, who are
poised to launch an initiative aimed at encouraging greater numbers of
juniors to take up the game and, crucially, stay in the sport beyond the
age of 12. 'We just want to bring the fun back into tennis for
girls. It's that simple,' said Sue Livingston, BWTA President."

BWTA
Day
at the DFS Classic
Tuesday 11 June 2002
Edgbaston Priory Club Birmingham
Members
and their guests, 29 in total, took advantage of an arrangement that BWTA
had with the LTA to entertain members and their guests at Edgbaston. The
day started with coffee in the Press Interview Room and a fascinating
presentation by the American player, Nicole Arendt. The presentation
took the form of a question and answer session in which Committee Members
Judy Angus and Jheni Osman put questions to Nicole about her career and
life on the Tour. Members then had the opportunity to ask their own
questions.
Members
went to watch the matches, which unfortunately were interrupted by heavy
showers, but they were able to partake of an excellent lunch, enjoy the
comfort of the facilities of the Club House and watch Ireland qualify for
the last sixteen in the World Cup!

Joyce
Butterfield
BWTA Vice-President retires
|
|
Joyce
has been a member of BWTA since the early days, joining in
1976. She was Junior County Organiser for
Leicestershire for 12 years and, in 1988, was elected the
first woman President of Leicestershire LTA, serving in
that position for five years. In 1993 Joyce achieved
another first by being appointed the first woman
Vice-President of the Leicestershire LTC.
In
December 1998 Joyce, who is married to Tony and has four
children and ten grandchildren, was awarded the LTA
Meritorious Award for services to tennis.
Joyce
was invited to join the BWTA Executive Committee in 1982,
representing the Midland Counties, and was subsequently
appointed a Vice-President. She has been largely
responsible for encouraging BWTA to run veterans events.
Joyce
has played County veteran ladies tennis at all age groups
and is waiting for the LTA to organise over 70's
inter-county matches where she hopes there may be a
vacancy! Joyce is a keen golfer and plays several
times a week.
BWTA
is enormously indebted for her contribution and support
over the years and has invited her to become an honorary
member of the Association.

Thanks
to the generosity of a member, BWTA is able to organise
tournaments for girls 10 & under progressing from mini tennis.
Players must be either be non-rated or have
an LTA rating of 7.3.
Lucy Bird organised the Starter Tournament at Chesham Bois in Buckinghamshire
on Sunday 7 July. She was delighted that 17 girls entered and to make
them feel at ease everyone was introduced to each other. The event was
very informal and from discussions with players she ascertained that their
greatest fear was that they could not get their serves in, so with that in
mind Lucy gathered the girls, took the balls on courts and had a fun few
minutes explaining different serves and letting them have a go! They
soon got the hang of it and had a few laughs when things went wrong! The
tournament was fun with three categories, two groups of first timers/non-rated
and one group of rated players.
