If you are prelighting the tree, the best solution to ensure imposters render using the prelit colours, is to use an RGB Multiply material. Set the first channel to the diffuse texture and the second to the vertex colour channel. Set the self-illumination parameter to 100. Also only check the 'Show map in viewport button' on the Bitmap page, not the material, to avoid rainbow coloured branches.
