Education (Mentoring)

This page provides links to information I found useful in my previous position as Learning Mentor. Although I am no longer employed as a Mentor I will continue to support this page.

Any help would be appreciated, if you come across any new information not included or any broken links please let me know.

Mentoring has enhanced my learning and understanding. The role of 'Mentor' is as diverse as it is fluid, one constantly changing whilst challenging.

Defining the role of Mentor is quite difficult due to the nature of the work, every student, situation and experience is unique. Flexibility and the ability to adapt to each and every situation are essential skills when mentoring.

My work as a Mentor involved working with identified students 1 to 1 and in groups to guide and support them whilst overcoming any barriers to learning which may have prevent them from realising their full potential as individuals.

In school, Mentors provide a complimentary service, working closely with teaching and non-teaching staff and agencies such as; probation, social and youth services, careers, EWO's, EBD teams etc. All work focuses on issues relevant to a students development and learning and aims to raise confidence and self esteem.

Access to a pool of accurate information and learning is invaluable. Although networking and sharing of information, ideas and experiences is a real asset, use of the internet allows you to access vast amounts of information, resources and experiences not previously available in much less time.
