Perfect Product

The best products are the ones that people want. You could sell anything via the Internet -  books, washing machines, cars, footspas, you name it, there's a customer looking for it somewhere. But you can't fit them down the wires, so by the time you've packaged and shipped them, the advantages of web marketing - low costs, immediate service, convenience - will be long gone.

The best products for the Web are digital or knowledge-based goods. These are items that can be shipped via the web - by email, ftp or download. No postage, no packing, no shipping costs - and your customer gets their goods straight away! But what do people want? The top 5 "best Web sellers" (in no particular order) are ...

1. Sex and gambling
No surprises here! No wonder there are so many xxx sites around, sex sells! If you can put your morals aside there is big money to be made here.

2. Software
Most people on the Internet have computers, so instantly downloadable software and games are sure to be superb sellers.

3. Direct-To-Consumer Services
This includes everything from  car insurance to stock market analysis; any service that can be produced electronically.

4. Consulting Services
Who would wait for an appointment with their solicitor / accountant / architect when they could get advice instantly on the Web? If you have specialist knowledge, a consultancy could be right for you, or better still...

5. Info-Products
Everyone has specialised information about something. Do you do DIY in your spare time - or look after children - or do knitting - or grow prizewinning marrows? Put your knowledge and experience into print and sell it as a downloadable e-book. There's more about this in Make Your Knowledge Sell, an e-book all about how to make money from selling ... your knowledge, funnily enough! Find out more about it here.

If you do want to sell hard goods - the washing machines, footspas and cars that just won't fit down the phonelines - be unique.Set up a themed site, such as "a thousand jams from around the world" or "everything the greatest Judy Garland fan needs". Combine your products with useful information and you're on to a winner!

You may already be selling something - or our top 5 may have given you a brainwave. Why not run your ideas through our check list and see if it makes the grade...
