Hyde Road, Gorton, Manchester M18

Photo 1/3: Looking towards Belle Vue from Garrat Way

Photo 2 below: Looking in the opposite direction about a couple hundred yards up shows the old Beswick Coop boarded up. This was later turned into an arcade of shops. Then went on fire, was demolished, and houses built on the site.

Photo 3 below: A photograph of the Knutsford Road coke yard (just off Hyde Rd near the above photos). I reckon we ratted every inch of it, and the railway lines at the back, in the winter of 1945/46. I think there was a miner's strike, I know there was no coal, and the search for fuel was a daily task. My dad worked at Gorton Tank, and he used to bring at least one lump of liberated coal home each night. I guess the railways had first dibs on coal, and I'd bet that all the railwaymen kept the home fires burning during that extremely cold winter.
