The Dargai St Working Men's Club, Clayton, Manchester, UK.

The above photograph was taken in December 1966. The problem is I cannot for the life of me recall the correct name of the location. The photograph was taken inside of a club that was on Dargai Street in Clayton. I used to call it the working men’s club; however, I think that the actual name of the place was the Clayton Labour, or Clayton Social Club. I know that there was a bowling green in the back that was protected by a six-foot tall black stockade fence.

My father, Fred Fisher is the shyly smiling gentleman in the white shirt on the left. He used to wait tables there on a weekend. He also used to run a football buster during the season. My mother, Alice Hope Fisher is the lady seated at my father’s side.

I am afraid that I broke down and cried for some considerable time when I came across your site. I got a flood of memories that overwhelmed me. I remembered the combined smell from the mixture of the Dean & Woods abattoir and Clayton Aniline chemical company on Ashton New Road. I remembered sitting in the Haunch of Venison pub near Stevenson Square drinking proper pints of proper Wilson’s beer. I was devastated by the photograph of the abandoned run down Magnet cinema in Newton Heath.
