B Of The Bang
The New Face of Modern Manchester
Photo taken from cark park of the new Asda Walmart store. The road junction is Ashton New Road and the New Alan Turing way. The blue van on the left is waiting at the traffic lights on Ashton-New-Rd facing towards town. Alan Turing Way is crossing this. It used to be called Mill St before it was widened into a duel carriegeway. You can just see the CIS Builing on Corporation St in town, in the background. Lookint to the right of the photo is Manchester City's new football Ground.

The new sculpture is located on the corner of Alan Turing Way and Ashton New Road, adjacent to the city of Manchester Stadium. Inspiration for its name is the comment made by Olympic Gold Medallist Linford Christie when he said that he started his race on the B of the Bang. The sculpture was commissioned by New East Manchester Ltd following an international competition. A panel of experts selected the winning design - B of the Bang - designed by Thomas Heatherwick. The structure is 56m (184ft) high, approximately the height of a 20 storey building and weighs 150 tons. As the tallest sculpture in the UK, inclined at an angle of 30 degrees from vertical, it represents a major challenge in both construction and engineering. Designer and former Manchester Polytechnic student, Thomas Heatherwick.
