The Lodge Cottage, Cwmygerwyn

The Valley and The Village

Cwmygerwyn valley You can step out of the cottage and choose a footpath to walk up to the top of the Radnor Forest, or take any other direction. Walk down the valley and explore Rock Dingle, and look for dippers in the stream. There's plenty of wildlife - ravens, buzzards and hawks are resident in the valley, and the typical Welsh woodland birds, such as redstart , wood warbler, spotted flycatcher and sometimes crossbills, are present. (Check the reports in our cottage nature diary.)

To Bleddfa village is a pleasant stroll down the lane. Bleddfa means "Place of the Wolf", for it is here that the last wolf in Wales is said to have been killed. The name of its pub, the Hundred House, recalls a time when the law courts travelled a circuit of the remoter areas. It serves meals, good and reasonably priced.

The old schoolhouse in Bleddfa has been converted into a lively and stylish art gallery and cultural centre, The Bleddfa Centre (see Links page).

You can buy excellent eggs in Bleddfa (and organic food from our neighbours in Cwmygerwyn). For your general food supplies, it's about 8 miles to Knighton or Presteigne.
