In the 1950s the Epworth Press began
to publish a series of delightful books by Freda Hurt about a
detective with a difference called Mr Twink. The difference being
that he was a black cat.
There was only ever one edition in
hardback and these are now quite scarce. Clever Mr Twink was also published in softback by Koala
Books (Epworth Press) in 1962.
Freda's nephew is trying to get the books republished.
If you are interested, please leave him a message
via this link.
There were a total of 9 books in the
series:
Mr Twink was a black cat who owed his remarkable blue eyes
to his Siamese ancestry. He lived with a poet and was ably
assisted in solving cases by Sgt Boffer, a well meaning collie, owned by
the village policeman.
What little I know about Freda Hurt I gleaned from the
back of the books.
Freda Hurt was a qualified nursery nurse and was a
deputy matron of a children’s nursery. She felt that she could make
a better job of ministering to the child mind and gave up nursing for
writing. She had been ‘scribbling’ (her own word) verses since
she was eleven, mostly to please herself. Some of them however got
into print. She was very fond of animals and had her own cats.
Freda wrote other children’s books and some adult ones too
which seem to be thrillers including a series about a character called
Detective Inspector Herbert Broom.
