Horace Walpole first used the word serendipity in his fairy-tale story 'The Three Princes of Serendip'. Serendip was formerly a name for Sri Lanka. The trio would set out on a quest which always ended with an accidental magical discovery. Hence the meaning of serendipity: The happy knack of making chance finds.
