DESCENDANTS OF JOSEPH HARDY OF KIRKBY-IN-ASHFIELD AND SELSTONJoseph HARDY was born about 1818 in Shipley, Derbyshire and was a coal miner by the age of 22. Fanny MARTIN, born about 1817 in Selston, became his wife on 13 August 1838 (married at Selston). At an address given as Kirkby Parks, Kirkby in Nottinghamshire in the 1841 census they had two children, Hannah HARDY aged 2 years and Jonathan HARDY aged 9 months.
* * * What were things like in the 1840's ?
1844 was the year in which The Factory Act secured a working day of 6.5 hours for children aged between 8 and 13, and 12 hour day for women workers and girls.
1844 was also the year of the Bank Charter Act, which limited the Bank of England to only issuing bank notes to the cover of £14,000,000 without cover in the form of bullion.
A report on the mines to the House of Commons in 1842 disclosed shocking conditions. Young children aged 5 or 6 acted as trappers toopen and shut the ventilating doors of the mines. This was considered dangerous and unhealthy work, and they were expected to do it for up to 12 hours a day without a break. In the coal mines young people were chained to pull trucks along low galleries on their hands and feet. An Act of Parliament in 1842 – The Coal Mines Act – changed things. For the first time women and children under the age of 10 were forbidden to work underground.

These abreviations may easily be taken as H, daughter, aged 13; Iain, son, aged 12; Da , son age 10; Jth , son age 9; Ma , dau age 7; and Har , dau age 5 months. At that time they were shown as living at Portland Row, Kirkby. The family are found at an address in Stoney Lane, Selston in the 1861 census. Joseph HARDY, now shown as age 43, a coal miner and local preacher, living with his wife _ Fanny _ six children and one visitor. Of their children, it is apparent from the census that David HARDY, a coal miner, was born about 1842 in Kirkby; that Joseph HARDY was born 11th March 1844 in Selston (sources : census and birth cert.); Mary HARDY, a servant, was born about 1846 in Kirkby; Harriet HARDY was born about 1853 in Selston; George HARDY was born about 1857 in Selston; Ann HARDY was born about 1859 in Selston. The visitor was lace dresser, Rebecca LIMB, born about 1837 in Selston. By the time of the 1871 census, only children Anne (spelt Ann before), Fanny (missing in 1861), and Geo(rge, presumably) were living with parents Joseph and Fanny HARDY at 104 (not necessarily the house number) Church Lane, Selston. Of the above named Jonathan HARDY, by the 1861 census he had married Sarah Ann FLINT, herself born about 1843, and was living with Sarah's parents in Selston. I have a photograph of a tombstone of St Helen's Parish Church, Selston which states Jonathan HARDY died Dec. 29th 1911, age 71 and "his beloved wife" Sarah Ann died Dec. 11th 1919, age 76 years. Of the above named David HARDY, he became a coal miner, married Olive who was about 12 years older than himself and who was born in Nottingham. Believed that Olive ran a dame school. David HARDY fathered Rosa A. HARDY, born 1 Sep 1874, and William R. HARDY, born about 1867. Both were born in Selston. William R. HARDY is described as a shoe black, and Rosa A. HARDY as a scholar, in the census of 1881 when the four were living at Palnelston Street (looks like), Underwood, Selston. They may have had at least two other children, Julia HARDY (born about 1865) and Helena HARDY (source: family names). Of the second named Joseph HARDY (the one born in 1844) he was a coal miner and Methodist local preacher at the 1871 census, and living in Underwood, Selston, with his wife, 2 daughters (Elizabeth and Fanny), and George HANCOCK a coalminer and lodger. Joseph HARDY married Margaret Hannah OSBORNE at St Helen's Parish Church, Selston on October 26th 1863 (source: M cert). Together they had at least 7 HARDY children, possibly 8, namely Elizabeth HARDY (b 1865), Fanny HARDY (b 1869), possibly Alitia HARDY (b 16 May d infancy) , William Osborne HARDY (b 1871), Mary HARDY (b 1875), Ewart HARDY (b 6 Jan 1880 - d Feb 1902 unmarried), Olive HARDY (b 1882), and Willfred Ellison HARDY (b 8 Oct 1884, bap 26th Oct 1884 at Wesleyan Methodist Chapel whilst living at Blackwell, Derbyshire). (see picture) From the 1871 census the above named Margaret Hannah OSBORNE was born in Kirkby circa 1846, and is described as a dressmaker by which talent living persons have known her by. Her marriage certificate dated October 26th 1863 to Joseph HARDY shows that her father was William OSBORNE, a draper of Selston. Her age is given as 18, which would suggest her birth was between October 27th 1844 and October 26th 1845. Searches at the General Register Office in London have not thrown up a birth entry for ‘Margaret Hannah Osborne’ at this time. One such William OSBORNE that was a draper in the 1871 Census in Selston was married to Elizabeth. The age of this William is given as 58 indicating his birth date to be about 1813. He was a farmer of 5 acres, a draper, and a local methodist preacher by that time. In the 1841 and 1851 census he is described as a FWK which means Framework Knitter. William OSBORNE's wife, Elizabeth OSBORNE (maiden name unknown), was born about 1822 in Hucknall, Notts. I have not been able to locate their marriage on the International Genealogical Index (IGI). Neither have I found the family of William and Elizabeth OSBORNE in Selston in 1861. The 1851 census gives only initials for children and these may be helpful. One of these initials “M_____, dau, age 5”, may be representative of Margaret Hannah OSBORNE. Margaret Hannah OSBORNE who became HARDY, died on 15th January 1929, following a fall down a staircase at 82 Bagshawe Street, Pleasley. She was bedridden and quite senile in her old age. It is bad practice to make assumptions. If the assumption is made, as based on the 1841 and 1851 census returns, then Margaret Hannah OSBORNE had a brother, George OSBORNE; a sister Alitia OSBORNE, born about 1848 at Kirkby, who later married an ALLEN and had a daughter Annie Maria ALLEN about 1870; and a sister with the initial H born about 1850. In addition to these brothers and sisters further family known knowledge suggests two other sisters __ Elizabeth OSBORNE and Mary OSBORNE. The last named Elizabeth OSBORNE married two FLINT brothers: William FLINT on 26th Oct 1868, and after his death in 1872, his brother James FLINT on 6th July 1874. From the first of these marriages came Mary FLINT _ a spinster _ 15th October 1869 to 18th June 1930; James FLINT - a batchelor - 11th July 1871 to 18th April 1950; and Elizabeth FLINT born 13 Jan 1873, who married Samuel BURTON who himself died during World War One. This last couple had one son William Henry BURTON, born 2nd Mar 1894. Elizabeth BURTON (nee FLINT) died during childbirth. From the second marriage of Elizabeth FLINT (nee OSBORNE), this time to James FLINT, came sons and daughters William FLINT, born 20 April 1875; Agnes FLINT; Dewis Osborne FLINT, born 17th Feb 1879; Joseph FLINT, born 4th Aug 1881; Sarah Anne FLINT, born 24th Oct 1883; John Henry FLINT, born 4th Sep 1886; Albert Leslie FLINT, born 18 Feb 1890, batchelor, died 15 Feb 1923. The above named William FLINT married Emma HARPHAM, giving rise to Ida Mary Spencer FLINT on 12 Dec 1901; Grace Elizabeth FLINT on 13 Oct 1902; Hannah Leonora FLINT on 26 Jun 1907; Olwen Esme FLINT on 18 Aug 1904; Hilda Sarah Marie FLINT on 21 Feb 1912; and Dorothy Ena FLINT on 28 Jun 1906. The above named Agnes FLINT married Sam COLEMAN but had no children. The above named Dewis Osborne FLINT married Ada giving rise to Osborne Harvey FLINT in March 1913 and also to Nera Iris FLINT. The above named Sarah Anne FLINT married Ernest WILLIAMS and gave birth to Freda Mary WILLIAMS in November 1912. The above named John Henry FLINT is believed to have had a daughter Olga FLINT. The above named Mary OSBORNE married one John GREGORY. My source for FLINT information and the John and Mary GREGORY information is Mrs J Hall of Selston who is the daughter of the above named Ida Mary Spencer FLINT. Some dates also came from memorial stones in St Helen's Parish Churchyard. Whilst checking the 1871 census for the HARDY name in Underwood, Selston, I noted that a John GREGORY and wife Mary were living next door to Joseph, Margaret, Elizabeth, and Fanny HARDY. This census gives the age of John, a coal miner, as 23 born in Selston. Mary was 19, and born in Kirkby. The above named George OSBORNE was born about 1841 in Kirkby, and married Rebecca (also born about 1841 in Kirkby). At the 1871 census they were living in Selston next door to William and Elizabeth OSBORNE, and working in the drapery business. In 1871 George and Rebecca OSBORNE were shown as having six children ___ John OSBORNE born about 1860 in Kirkby; Rosanne OSBORNE born about 1863 in Kirkby; William OSBORNE born about 1864 in Selston; Elizabeth OSBORNE born about 1866 in Selston; Joseph Kinney OSBORNE born about 1869 in Annesley; and Eliza Ann OSBORNE aged 5 months at the census. From the marriage of Joseph HARDY to Margaret Hannah OSBORNE came the following children, and the information comes from living persons. Their descendants are set out in chapters corresponding to the index number:
Of the last named Elizabeth HARDY who became SLACK, she had six children. These were Slyvia SLACK, Edith Marion SLACK, Olive May SLACK, Harold Thomas SLACK, Hilda Mabel SLACK and Evelyn Maud SLACK. Slyvia SLACK, born 6 Jul 1988 died in infancy. Edith Marion SLACK, born 17 Aug 1889, died 21 Oct 1971. Her first marriage was to William HAYES and this marriage produced Gordon Thomas HAYES on 29 Apr 1917. Her second marriage was to Samuel Arthur SKEELS, giving rise to a son, Gilbert Harold SKEELS on 30 Mar 1927. Gilbert Harold SKEELS is not married. The above named Gordon Thomas HAYES married Audrey Phylis ROE, giving rise to Alan William HAYES on 5 Jun 1948, and David Robert HAYES on 9 Mar 1952. Alan William HAYES married Janet FROGGATT on 30 Dec 1972 and they have three children, Jane Alexandra HAYES (born 19 Apr 1976), Timothy James HAYES (born 17 Nov 1977) and Esther Elizabeth HAYES (born 24 Jul 1979). The above named David Robert HAYES married Jean Mary Crowther on 10 Aug 1974 and they have two children, Peter Daniel HAYES (born 5 Jul 1981) and Joanna Mary HAYES (born 20 Feb 1979). Olive May SLACK, was born at 63 Colliery, Blackwell, Derbyshire on 16 May 1891. Olive married Arthur William Fletcher VANN, a coal miner, at Primitive Methodist Chapel, Reform Street, Sutton in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire on 26 Dec 1913. Olive died 7 Mar 1979 at Victoria Hospital, Mansfield - her usual address given then was 6 Pennine Drive, Kirkby in Ashfield, Notts. The couple had four children, C. Roland VANN, Douglas VANN, Norman VANN, Dorothy VANN. I would love to hear from anyone who connects to any of the above.
