The EDNEY family from North Curry and Durston, Somerset, England.

Many of the Edney family were basket makers or thatchers.  Some of them did both jobs at different times in their lives.

James Edney was born in North Curry, Somerset in 1798.  In 1820 he married Mary GRIDLEY who was the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Gridley.  They had several children including a son, Samuel born in 1822.

In 1846 Samuel Edney (born 1822) married a widow, Sarah POLE nee HUBBARD in Durston, Somerset.  Sarah already had two daughters from her first marriage and she and Samuel Edney went on to have five sons.  After the death of Sarah, Samuel married Frances.

Samuel Edney, middle son of Samuel and Sarah Edney was born at Durston, Somerset in 1852.  In 1876 he married Jane MOORE at Stoke St Gregory, Somerset.  Jane was the daughter of James Moore and Hephzibah Pim KEIRLE.  (Hephzibah's name is given as Hephzibeth Pim on her marriage certificate).

Samuel and Jane had four children but sadly Jane died in 1881 when the fourth baby was born and the baby died too.  Samuel was left with three children under 5 years old.  Her daughter, Ada who was 3 at the time of her mother's death remembered being looked after by an aunt who kept her tied up to the leg of the table to stop her running away!  Some years later Samuel married Jane Ann Warren.

Ada Edney, daughter of Samuel and Jane Edney went into service and became a cook.  She met her husband Arthur Bertram Finch when he was delivering paraffin oil to the house where she worked.
