The
HAYES family of Gloucester
Joseph Hayes (born 1833) ran a building business in Gloucester,
England. His father and grandfather
were both called Joseph and they had been builders in the city too.
In fact there was a Joseph Hayes, builder in Gloucester for most of
the1800s.

Joseph
married Elizabeth Esther WOODLAND in 1863.
She had been born in Woodchurch, Kent in 1828.
She was the daughter of William Woodland, (a labourer who later became a
miller) and Mary nee HOLYER
A book of building jobs done by Joseph Hayes and Son, Builder, can be seen
in the Gloucestershire Record
Office, Gloucester, England, ref D5559/4/2.

Hubert Joseph Woodland Hayes, my grandfather and son of Joseph and Elizabeth Hayes was born in1869. He was good friends with Christopher Surrey. They went on a boating holiday down the Thames in the mid 1890s with two others (Four men in a boat!) Later Chris Surrey married Bert's sister, Mary Jane

Bert
married
Alice Emma
ARNOLD in 1903. They spent their married life in Gloucester. Alice came from Kent and was the daughter of
George Arnold and Clara Ann
nee RUSSELL.

They had two children : Basil Arnold Woodland Hayes (b 1904) and Judith's father Hubert Claude Surrey Hayes (b 1907). The links with the Surrey and Woodland families were preserved in their names.
Basil was unmarried and lived in the same house in Gloucester from 1914 to 1987 and worked mainly as a gardener. Hubert (known as Claude) married Emily Finch in 1937.
