| So, having built Thetford
Town the next project is the Foden. As with the Burrell this web page will
be its story from beginning to end. As the project progresses pages will
be replaced so if you come in part way through you will have missed things.
It will probably take about a couple of years ........ so be patient! The
start is May 2003 with the chassis ......... but first ...... |

Why the Foden? well I think it has character
and is interesting to look at. But as beauty is in the eye of the beholder
perhaps not all will agree. The 3" scale model being built is just
about within my workshop capabilities (with a bit of inventiveness) and
it should be a better model to drive than a showman's engine which has
everything under that massive canopy. (I know this has a cab but the cab
rear can be modified to give access ........ and yes I could have modified
the canopy of the Burrell, but didn't!)

 |
| Why an estate wagon? well
again I think that dumpy vehicle ooozes power and from a practical point
of view the driver gets to be nearer the cab. |

My model
so far ....... almost there |

The tractor
version has the chassis shortened to just behind the rear wheels and usually
has a sloping side or canvass coverable back. |
| So, what's it based on? well
the drawings are by a chap called Terry Morris. They were drawn in 1972,
so some 30 years ago, he wrote some articles in the ME over the period of
May 72 to September 73 whilst he was building the model in which it is clear
that the drawings are not a true scale of a prototype ...... but hey, so
what? ....... the fact they exist and are a very good replication of the
Foden range is sufficient for most modellers and if you are a true to scale
buff you could take them and modify them to fit your prototype. Or, if like
me make up your own version loosely based on something you like. |
