Lyrics

A mostly upbeat and uptempo album which develops further Madonna's move towards European Dance but still retains a rocky, american edge. Excellent.

  1. Music *****

      The transatlantic number one which took a few listens to get used to but with its hypnotic beat, vocoder chorus and 'Lost In Space' sound effects turns out to be one of the biggest tracks on the album. Written by Madonna/Mirwais Armadzai.

  2. Impressive Instant ***

      Dark electronic effects that border on musical digestion and a pure disco beat continue where Music leaves off. Whispers, vocodered vocals add to the main vocals to produce another funky song albeit much less commercial than the first. Another Madonna/Mirwais Armadzai composition.

  3. Runaway Lover ****

      Bridges the Mirwais funk into Orbit's more trance style of beat. This is more like the Madonna song of old dressed up in Ray of Light clothes. Written by Madonna/William Orbit.

  4. I Deserve It ****

      Complete change of tempo with Madonna singing along with acoustic guitar and basic drums. As the song progresses synthesisers sweep into the background almost like police sirens passing in the night. Atmospheric and folky. Madonna/Mirwais Armadzai

  5. Amazing *****

      A possible future single that begins quietly and then bursts into a Beautiful Stranger groove. Rocky, yet danceable as well. At a late stage the sound drops to just piano and Madonna and sounds almost experimental like new musician Steve Reich. Madonna/William Orbit

  6. Nobody's Perfect *****

      More whispering before more vocoder vocals but this time with a melancholy vibe. Mirwais' keyboards perfectly match Madonna's vocal giving another hypnotic track. Madonna/Mirwais Armadzai

  7. Don't Tell Me ****

      Acoustic guitar with cut-up production opens a mid-tempo song that has a seventies west coast feel. Ends with strings that gives me another echo of Steve Reich's The Desert Music. The second single and enhanced greatly by a stomper of a video. Madonna/Mirwais Armadzai

  8. What It Feels Like For A Girl *****

      Opens with a sample of a speech by Charlotte Gainsbourg in The Cement Garden. A future single by all accounts and a brave choice. Easily the track with the sweetest melody and multi-layered backing to the chorus but by no means a standard radio song. Written by Madonna/Guy Sigsworth.

  9. Paradise (Not For Me) *****

      Reminds a little of Japan's Ghost. Hypnotic, sparse keyboards, a half-spoken song, first in english and then in french, all marked by oriental percussion. Dreamy lyrics of life's highs and lows. Mirwais Armadzai/Madonna

  10. Gone ****

      A purely acoustic beginning that is reminiscent of sixties folk songs. Later keyboard flare like single fireworks before a sudden and downbeat conclusion. Madonna/Damian Le Gassick/Nik Young

      While it's understandable why this cover version is on the UK edition, it doesn't fit in. It might have been better placed at an earlier stage on the album. In any case another number one in the UK. Written by Don McLean
