The A to Z of Hit Albums 2000 (UK): W
Robbie Williams
Ex-Take That singer Robbie Williams further emphasises his position as Britain's
favourite lad by debuting at no 1 with his third album Sing When You're Winning on 3rd
September. Despite fan's approval critics have been less kind with the most common criticism
being that the album is more of the same as the previous two efforts. Nevertheless the thumping
rock dance number Rock DJ, the duet with Kylie Minogue Kids, the autobiographical
Road to Mandalay and the I Will Survive sampling Supreme should provide fodder for
the charts in months to come. As usual Williams' lyrics are aided and abetted by writing partner Guy
Chambers.
... Russell Watson
Modesty clearly is not the way to sell classical/pop crossover albums as The Voice
jumps into the UK Top 10 for the first time on October 8th and climbs to no 5 one week later. Russell Watson
was singing in working men's clubs in the north of England until recently. Now with appearances
at the European Cup Final and Rugby World Cup matches, his blend of popular opera on The Voice
is set to make his name. The usual tenor favourites are all here from Nessun Dorma to
Funiculi, funicula with a few contemprary numbers such as Mercury's Barcelona and
Ultravox's Vienna. Bound to climb higher as Christmas approaches.
