The A to Z of Hit Albums 2000 (UK): R
Radiohead
"I know what we'll do. Let's throw away our instruments. Pick up a new one and learn to play it.
And then make music totally different from our last albums." Mad? Insane, even? It seems not as
Radiohead prove with the astonishing Kid A which debuts straight at the top on
October 8th. While much noise has been made about the Beatles vs Oasis battle for the best British
band of all time, Radiohead's The Bends and OK Computer have consistently
held their places in any magazine polls. With Kid A they test this popularity to the
limit. Traditional guitars and drums are mostly gone, replaced by ambient and electronic
sounds. Their depressing view of humanity remains however with National Anthem,
Idioteque and the pessimistic Optimistic as stand out tracks. The orchestral
ballad How To Disappear Completely screams for release as a single but Radiohead
don't play by the rules. Worth seeking out but listen with patience...
... Red Hot Chilli Peppers
| No 9: Aug 13th (No 5: Jun 1999) |
Back in the top 10 in 2000 on the strength of the title-track as single and the gaming video,
Californication by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers peaks at no 9 on August 13th.
The american band who were the flavour of 1991 with their Blood Sugar Sex Magic album
have disappointed many fans since then with lack-lustre releases. However the 1999 album Californication
sees them back at the top of their game. Top tracks are the title track, Around The World,
Scar Tissue and Otherside.
... Cliff Richard
It may be called The Whole Story but with only 47 tracks this latest greatest hits by
Cliff Richard can only include just over a third of the 60-year-old's hits from the last
40 years. Beginning with the rock and roll of his youth in Move It and Living Doll
through his late-70s revival of Devil Woman and We Don't Talk Anymore, through the
80s and 90s Christmas chart-toppers Mistletoe and Wine and Saviour's Day to
the recent Milennium Prayer the double CD covers most of the entertainer's high spots.
It debuts at no 7 on October 15th and climbs one spot higher the following week.
