Coldplay
No 1: Jul 16th

You can just see the Britsh music press reviews in eighteen months, "a disappointing second album" but for now Coldplay hit the jackpot with their first as Parachutes debuts at no 1 on July 16th. The band have been going down well on the festival circuit, and their hit single Yellow which hit no 4 is bound to have helped. The lads, Chris Martin vocals and guitar, Guy Berryman - bass, Jonny Buckland - lead guitar and Will Champion - drums, met while studying in London although they come from the four corners of the UK, Devon, Fife, North Wales and Southhampton respectively. Trouble, the title track and the two singles Yellow and Shiver are the highlights... Comparisons with Travis, Radiohead and Jeff Buckley abound but while Coldplay may be as melodic they are more upbeat...

The Corrs
No 1: Jul 23rd
No 8: Jan 16th (No 2: Jan 1999)

Held back for over six months to make sure that it avoided millenium madness, In Blue finally appears on July 23rd at no 1 on its first week. The Irish family group, Andrea, Jim, Caroline and Sharon first got their international break through the film The Commitments in which all four had minor roles. Andrea also played Peron's lover in the next Alan Parker movie, Evita. The latest album, under the production of John ‘Mutt’ Lange, husband of Shania Twain, takes the Corrs away from their Irish roots to a more pop sound on most of the tracks. Stand out songs are the singles Radio and Breathless, the instrumental Rebel Heart, All the Love in the World and Irrestible. The band's first album Forgiven Not Forgotten was still bobbing around the charts after Christmas peaking in 2000 at no 8 on Jan 16th.

And the rest...

... Mel C
No 4: Aug 27th

When Melanie Chisolm, better known as Sporty Spice, released Northern Star last year, the first single Goin' Down had suggested it would have an indie feel. In fact the album has a wide range of styles making it difficult to bracket and unlikely to appeal to everyone. Yet with the no 1 successes of the R&B Never Be The Same Again, featuring the rapping talents of Lisa Lefteye Lopes from TLC, and the Ibiza-friendly remix of I Turn To You the album has had a bit of a revival in 2000, peaking at no 4 on August 27th. Mel C is currently promoting the the latest Spice Girls album...

... Chicane
No 10: Apr 2nd

... Cypress Hill
No 6: Apr 30th
