The Advanced Test

The Advanced Driving Test, which lasts for 90 minutes, is something which any motorist of reasonable experience and skill should be able to pass . Whether the candidates pass or fail, they learn a great deal from the serving or ex-police who hold Advance Police Certificates and conduct the test on about 140 different routes all over the United Kingdom.

Each test route covers about 35-40 miles and incorporates road conditions of all kinds, including congested urban areas, main roads, motorways where possible, narrow country lanes and residential streets.

You are not expected to give a display of fancy driving. On the contrary, the examiners hope you will handle your car in the steady workmanlike way in which you should drive day by day. They like to see you make progress consistent with safety, and drive as to the conditions at the time. They want to see candidates observe all speed limits and drive with due regard and courtesy to other road users. You will be asked to reverse around a corner, to perform parallel parking, turn the vehicle round using forward and reverse gears (3 point turn) The examiner will ask you on a number of occasions what the last road sign was. This is a spot check on your powers of observation.
There are no trick questions, no attempts to catch you out, and you are not even required to give a running commentary at any time (although you are free to do so if you wish to make extra clear you ability to "read the road").

These are some of the things our examiners look for:
Smooth and progressive acceleration. Is acceleration used a the right time and place.
Progressive and smooth braking.
Not to slip the clutch or to coast.
Hold the steering wheel at the ten to two or quarter to three position and pass the wheel through your hands.
Are you alert at the wheel; do you rest your arm on the door?
Must be able to use full powers of observation and have a good sense of anticipation.
Driver must keep his/her concentration and not be distracted by anything from his/her driving.
Are traffic signals and road markings observed, obeyed and approached correctly? Show courtesy at pedestrian crossings.
The examiner will not condone breaches of the law such as speed limits, double white lines, stop signals, traffic lights and pedestrian crossings.
Overtaking must be carried out safely and decisively.
All bends and corners must be taken in correct manner.
Does the candidate use the mirror correctly before changing speed or course.
Signals must be given if necessary and in good time and cancelled afterwards.
Must be in evidence of a certain amount of restraint and not indecision at the wheel.
Courtesy and consideration must be given to all other road users both vehicular and pedestrian. Respect for car and passengers.

Any one can take the test providing that he/she has a full British Driving Licence and has not been convicted of a serious traffic offence in the past three years. You can take the test in almost any car which you provide yourself.
