Club History Founded in 1976, by John Grey, the Club was originally called Woodhill Boys Club, as most of the boys, including John’s son, came from Woodhill Primary School. At that time they only had one team, however as the Club grew they didn’t want to seem parochial, and therefore they devised a new name, Rossvale, which they felt no-one else would have. The name was taken from Rossie Crescent, and Vale Walk. The Clubs colours of red/yellow and black, were specifically chosen for two main reasons, first John Grey was a Partick Thistle supporter, secondly, and sadly, it was done to stay away from blue and green, to avoid any associations with Celtic or Rangers. This is followed through at training, where the boys wear training kit; given out by the Club to stop them wearing strips that could cause conflict. This also prevents situations where boys who do not have a great deal of money dress the same as those who do. The ethos of the Club is that the boys are there to play for Rossvale, and to actively promote the mixing of young people from different backgrounds. Success has been sporadic over the years, with various teams being fairly successful, with the Club winning the Scottish Cup in 1986, then again in 1996, and most recently 2001 which was played at Hampden Park. The Club has won a number of other leagues and cup titles, however it is the education of the young person that is of the utmost importance, to develop and play at the highest level possible, rather than trophies. However we have tried to maintain a coaching level, by encouraging our coaches to go through the SFA courses, and to their credit almost all of our coaches, have been through their C, D, E or G. To coach the kids properly, is we feel most important target. The Club regularly travels to Holland, where they developed an interest of the Dutch method of coaching the kids from a younger age, and that encouraged them to set up their nursery. This led to them purchasing one of the first sets of seven-a-side goals from the SFA, and then taking an active part in the setting up of the East Dunbartonshire soccer sevens, at one point having nearly fifty percent of the teams in the league. With the setting up our new soccer academy, we hope that the standard of the Club is raised, promoting discipline and fair play, whilst educating the boys to work in a team. We have found that developing the young players we have managed to get a number of players in to the senior teams development squads, such as Celtic, Hearts, Kilmarnock, Clyde, Hibs, Livingston, etc.. We are constantly, looking for coaches, who are looking to educate themselves to come into the Club, where they will be helped to go through their coaching certificates if they are interested. The Club is built on people trying to better themselves, whether it is the players or the coaches. |
