Committee will review this policy on a regular basis.

KEY PRINCIPLES – RIGHTS/RELATIONSHIPS/RESPONSIBILITIES

Coaches must respect and champion the rights of every individual to participate in sport

Coaches must develop a relationship with players (others) based on openness/honesty/mutual trust and respect

Coaches must demonstrate proper personal behaviour/conduct at all times

Coaches should maximise benefits and minimise risk to players and attain a high level of competence through qualifications and commit to ongoing training that ensures safe and correct practice

Coaches should avoid any situation, which may lead to allegations of abuse.

These would include:  Being left alone with a child/children particularly within changing rooms.  Encourage an open environment and enlist the help of parents/others.  It is unwise to spend time alone with children anywhere e.g. the car/changing room/walking home etc

If these circumstances are unavoidable they should only occur with parent/carer consent.

FORMS OF ABUSE

-------------------------

 1)                    1) PHYSICAL: When injury is sustained by striking/hitting/shaking/squeezing/biting/burning or any attempt to use excessive force on a child.  In football situations, abuse may be deemed if the nature of training disregards the child’s growing body/overuse/fatigue areas affected are usually the knee/ankle/shin/lower back

2)                    2)            SEXUAL: Adults seeking their own gratification by use of physical harm/exposing to literature/jokes/stories of an explicit nature.  As a significant individual in a young persons life the coach must be aware of how easily children are influenced by him/her and how emotionally confused and misguided when dealing when dealing with adults.

3)                    3)            NEGLECT: Occurs whenever an adult fails to meet the basic needs of a child with regard to food/warmth/hygiene/clothing/medical care/proper supervision or adequate care and attention.  In a football context an e.g. of neglect would be a child playing in extreme cold whilst inadequately dressed

 4)                    4)            EMOTIONAL: A child can be undermined by the following – failure to exhibit care and attention but instances were a child is threatened/taunted or shouted at which as a consequence leads to loss off self esteem/confidence similarly undermining a child by ignoring effort or progress.  Coaches who over-emphasise the result of a game can be guilty of berating youngsters and creating a stressful situation leading to a lack of confidence and self esteem.
