PROFILE

A professionally qualified and highly experienced Senior IT Consultant, specialising in the fields of IT Security. After gaining a degree in mathematics and a qualification in accountancy, his career developed within the Information Technology function of a blue-chip multi-national company. Alan has worked as an independent consultant since 1997, registered with the British Computer Society in 1998. Alan is an accomplished speaker and presenter at international conferences and training courses, and author of many articles in the computer and accountancy press. He speaks German and some French.

Major achievements include:

• International IT Security assignments in Switzerland and other European countries, the USA and the Far East;

• Evaluation of tools for Risk Management and Compliance (Sarbanes-Oxley, Basle II, COBIT, ISO 17799);

• Development of Security Reviews programme and IT Security Compliance material for a major chemical company;

• Development of E-Commerce Security Policy and Guidelines, selection of Public Key Infrastructure: use of encryption in applications such as protection for PCs and servers and secure electronic mail;

• Development of IT Security policies for a major security company as part of their project to achieve ISO 17799 accreditation for information security management;

• Due diligence evaluation of a company developing encryption-based IT Security products for a major venture capital company;

Worked as Information Security consultant to clients including Ciba-Geigy PLC and Novartis Crop Protection in the UK, Ciba Speciality Chemicals in the UK and Switzerland, and TB Anti-Virus in Switzerland. Registered IT Security Consultant with the British Computer Society and active member of the BCS Information Security Special Interest Group.

• Projects to improve Information Security standards and policies on topics such as wireless networking security, Internet security, laptop and electronic mail encryption, remote access security and enterprise security management;

• Project to improve network security including penetration testing, implementation of intrusion detection and event log management software;

• Provision of specialist advice on viruses and other malicious software, especially with regard to security of Microsoft products and keeping anti-virus/spyware protection up-to-date;

• Developed a Security White Paper for an E-Commerce company in the financial services industry;

• Worked with Business Link in Macclesfield to provide Information Security advice, including anti-theft precautions and secure Internet connection, to small businesses in the area;

• Carried out an E-Commerce Security review for a firm of patent agents;

• Carried out Data Protection Act and Software Licence Compliance audits. Retained by a firm of solicitors to provide Data Protection advice to their clients;

• Provided an expert witness report to defendant’s solicitors in a Computer Misuse Act prosecution that directly led to the charges being dropped.
